6 Facts About Cockroaches That You Should Know

Are cockroaches overrunning your home?  If you’ve seen one, there are more. Cockroaches have flat, oval-shaped bodies that are brown or reddish-brown in color. They have small heads, with two antennae, and six long, spiny legs that allow them to run across almost any surface including walls and ceilings. Some species have wings that are flattened against their backs, although not all cockroaches use their wings to fly. Cockroaches can measure up to two inches in length. Those found in tropical climates tend to be larger. Here are six facts you should know about these pesky, creepy creatures.

6 Facts

If you suspect you may have cockroaches, here are some things you should know:

#1: Because your home has plenty of food and water, it’s warm, and there are numerous sites to nest, cockroaches find them an ideal breading ground where they can remain active all year round.

#2: Cockroaches can access your home in numerous ways including:

  • Through cracks and crevices
  • From vents
  • From sewer and drain pipes
  • They can be transferred into your home via grocery bags, purses, backpacks, boxes, or on your clothing

#3: Cockroaches reproduce quickly. If you see one, rest assured there are many more hiding and multiplying behind your walls.

#4: Cockroaches leave behind dead bodies, skin, and excrement that can exacerbate allergies, particularly in children and other sensitive people.

#5: Cockroaches tend to be evasive and nocturnal so you typically only see them at night. However, as stated earlier, if you see one, it’s likely you haven’t seen them all. If you do see cockroaches during the day, that could mean they are being forced out due to overcrowding. This can be a sign of severe infestation.

#6: You can try to eradicate cockroaches on your own, but chances are you will be unsuccessful.  Cockroach eggs do not succumb to many over-the-counter insecticides. Therefore, without special equipment, skills, and knowledge, fighting an infestation can be an uphill battle.
