Don’t Open Your Door To Bugs

Bugs are unsanitary, a nuisance, and just plain creepy, and do not belong in your home. You may wonder how they are getting in. In the summer, the kids are more than likely running in and out of the house leaving the door open, so that’s one way. But when the cooler weather settles in and you are still finding insects in your house, you may be overlooking their easiest entrance: the door, even when it’s closed! Don’t open your door to bugs.

Stop Those Insects!

In case you haven’t thought of this already, the tiny openings, gaps, and cracks in your home not only let bugs in, they let cold air in, and heat out. When you think of drafts, where is the first place you think of? Under your door. That drafty crack between the threshold of the entrance and the door may seem too small to let in creatures, but don’t let yourself be fooled. While your family is asleep at night, or not at home during the day, they may be making themselves at home.  To make sure that isn’t happening in your home, check the seal. It is easy and cheap to seal your door against the cold and the insects. Here are some ways to do it:

  • Install a sturdy steel or aluminum threshold under all entrance doors.
  • Add a nylon brush door sweep (as opposed to neoprene or vinyl) to cover the area between the bottom of the door and the threshold.
  • Add weather stripping around the doorjamb to keep air and insects from entering along the sides and/or top of the door.
  • Seal the joint between the door frame and wall, especially at the bottom where the frame meets the ground, with caulk. That area is often overlooked.
  • For added protection install a door closer–a hydraulic device that automatically closes and latches the door. This way you can be sure the door is closed each time the kids run in and out.
