What Is Dry Rot? Part 2

In our last blog we learned that dry rot is a fungus that destroys wood, and is caused by moisture. We also learned how to spot it and where to look. In today’s blog, What Is Dry Rot? Part 2, we will learn how to control and treat dry rot. Typically, dry rot will only affect damp wood with a moisture content over 20 percent. Remember to be sure you are treating dry rot and not wet rot, or better yet, call us so we can treat it for you!

Dry Rot Control

Treating dry rot begins with the first and most important step which is to remove the source of moisture.  Dry rot can only be controlled if this is done. The timber needs to be able to dry out before the dry rot can be controlled. Moisture can come from:

  • Leaking bathtubs, sinks, shower trays, washing machines, dishwashers, etc.
  • Condensation
  • Leaks in the roof
  • Dampness penetrating through the walls
  • Rising dampness from outside the building

Treatment

Once the cause of the rot has been eradicated, the affected lumber should be removed and replaced with pre-treated lumber, and any wood that remains at risk should be treated with a fungicide. If dry rot has passed through the masonry, isolate it physically, and also sterilize the masonry. Choose a fungicide that is reputable and will spread deep into the lumber because it will not work until it comes into contact with the fungi.

Most home owners prefer not to be bothered with this type of treatment and repair, and that’s why you can simply call us and we will take care of it for you, quickly and professionally!
