The NPMA (National Pest Management Association) estimates that 21 million rodents begin looking for warmth and food during the fall and winter inside of homes.  That’s just rodents, then there are pests such as cockroaches, ants, and spiders.  Don’t invite pests into your home this winter. Here are some things you can do to keep them out.

How to Pest Proof Your Home

Here are some ways to pest-proof the outside of your home this winter:

• Replace loose mortar around the foundation.
• Seal any outside holes or cracks with caulk, steel wool, or both, especially where utility wires and pipes enter your home.
• Add weather stripping around doors and windows.
• Repair damaged screens.
• Install door sweeps on all exterior doors.
• Cover all vent openings and chimney openings with screens.
• Trim shrubbery away from the house.
• Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house.
• Remove any sources of standing water.

Here are some ways to pest-proof the inside of your home:

• Inspect anything brought into your home including clothes items, grocery bags, boxes, and other packages/items for hitchhiking pests.
• Store food in airtight containers.
• Dispose of kitchen and other trash regularly.
• Ventilate basements, crawl spaces, and attics.
• Eliminate leaky pipes, clogged drains, and other leaks or standing water.
