Can Insects Cause Disease?
Insects such as fleas, mosquitoes, lice, bed bugs, and ticks are able to transmit a number of diseases. These diseases include viruses such as yellow fever, the chikungunya virus, and dengue fever; bacteria that cause Lyme disease; and parasites that cause malaria, sleeping sickness, and more. These diseases thrive mainly in tropical environments. However, with that said, the frequency of such diseases changes continuously. While some have become rare and others no longer exist, still others are spreading.
Can Rodents Cause Disease?
Rodents can spread disease by biting or through contact with their feces which can contain bacteria and viruses including:
- Salmonellosis: If food becomes contaminated by rodent feces it can cause diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain.
- Rat-Bite Fever: Getting bit by a rat or consuming food contaminated by rodents can lead to a potentially fatal infectious disease referred to as rat-bite fever.
- Hantavirus: Transmitted to humans by rodents such as the white-footed deer mouse, the hantavirus is a potentially life-threatening disease. Humans become infected via exposure to, or inhalation of, infected rodent saliva, urine, or feces.
- Bubonic plague: Spread by infected rodent fleas, symptoms include headache, fever, and painfully swollen lymph nodes.
